Dietary guidelines – what do they mean? The 8th edition of the Dietary guide for Americans has been published by the United States Departments of Health and Human Services and Agriculture. The guidelines advise “….a healthy eating pattern throughout life with a specific focus on obtaining a good variety of food with appropriate nutrient density …” Hmmm – are you more informed now about what you could eat? The definition of a “healthy eating pattern” has altered over many years – from low fat to high protein to no sugar – creating bewildering confusion in application. Meanwhile more than 60% of Australians remain overweight or obese. Where to start? Eat more vegetables! A 2014 analysis showed that death was reduced from ALL causes by 42% by eating more than 7 serves (about half a cup) of vegetables. Seven serves of vegetables – now we can all do that!
